There are a lot of things still left unsaid about stone typography, and here we want to talk about those for the first time:
- When do we know that we will have to add a font to our stone font collection? It’s simple. We just look for any sign that suggests a hard stony style and usually, they are not very difficult to find. How hard is it to see a couple of crumbling blocks of letters and realize they’re made of stone? Not that all these fonts are cracked or broken; only if they want to emphasize a rough feature. What’s more, the stone you collect from the desert is probably covered with dust, whereas rivers are full of washed spotless stones. So how can you say that stone fonts have to be either this or that? Just like real stones, our fonts can be both dirty or clean depending on their design. Plus, if you want to get something fancy out of it, you just have to hope you run into some kind of marble texture font that probably has an obvious elegant upper-class quality. Then there are the conventional stony fonts, some borrowing a cartoon style in order to highlight a playful approach, while some others adopt a more realistic outline preferably in silver to look just like a real stone.
- Besides being hard as a rock, how does a stone typeface usually feel like? Despite being made of stone, these fonts can never be described as flinty. They may be hard on the outside, but the inside can come in many colors. So if you’ve come here looking for a font to represent you as hardcore and determined in a totally formal design, don’t just give up easily after seeing all the cute stone fonts lying around in our collection. Yeah, big surprise, they can capture more than just one type of character. That’s exactly what makes them so useful in every concept. A friendly tone is carved all over their raw stiff bodies, a combination that might sound so rare, but benefits your lettering on different levels. Engraved with a cheerful touch, rock fonts make a lovely impression even when eroded. The stone alphabet may come with such rudimentary design details sometimes that their retro touch takes you so far back in time that you reach the Stone Age. That’s why they look even more in character in Greek. They even pick up a nice ancient touch in Greek or Egyptian, and you don’t even have to know the language to notice that. Of course, you still need rocks to build stuff even in the modern era, from luxury buildings to rich artworks.
- There are a lot of designs that you can build with these stone letters. When the overall look of any of our brick fonts is that bold, imagine what a sexy tattoo you can make out of it. It leads to a work of art so unique that not a lot of people have thought of it before and therefore are attracted to it. Logos are another area where stone fonts can shine in their own crude way. For example, you can download one of those drawing-style ones for your toy company and another one less decorative for a construction firm or something. However, they don’t work for just about any stone theme. Case in point, it’s probably not okay to use them for the stone carving on graves, unless you want the thumb stone to look as if you have a running joke with the deceased! So it’s better for the sake of dignity that there would never be a stone font in any part of a memorial. The thing is that all these fonts are made with at least a minimum dose of playfulness. As small as that might be, this funny edge probably won’t allow you to use the stone alphabet everywhere. If you won’t be smart in your choice of fonts, a stone font can be the nail in the coffin instead of a blessing.
