Arugula feels utilitarian in the most characterful way, squeezing tall, narrow sans-serif forms through chunky stencil cuts and deliberately practical gaps. The compact proportions and blunt construction echo military crate markings, while the uneven internal breaks keep the alphabet from looking too sterile or digitally perfect.
Use this stencil font for industrial packaging, military-inspired posters, wayfinding graphics, utilitarian branding, labels, or rugged editorial headlines. Tight spacing reinforces its functional character, while oversized type lets the stencil construction become more graphic. Olive, sand, black, off-white, or warning-orange palettes can lean into its field-equipment roots without turning the design into costume.
Note of Designer
_Arugula_ is a military-style stencil sans-serif in
quite narrow proportions.
It is developed from found stencilling on the side of a case of rocket ammunition. At more than 150 glyphs, the repertoire is enough to support Welsh, Slovene, and basic English.
Accents in the font can be placed onto letters and numbers using the Unicode combining feature. For wayfinding, arrows are supplied, and markers for
croissant, coffee, and fountain.Find more of my fonts at https://about.cubictype.com/
